The record
The Snowy Mountains Scheme was a quarter-century of dams, tunnels and power stations in the Australian Alps, built by a workforce of tens of thousands living in construction towns far from any municipal brigade. The Snowy Mountains Hydro-Electric Authority ran its own fire service, and this Series II Land Rover was one of its appliances.
The firefighting equipment was supplied by Firefly of London, whose light-appliance conversions gave the Land Rover curved body sides in place of the flat pickup panels, with the pump exposed at the rear for quick access. The base is a 1960 long-wheelbase Series II with the 2.25-litre petrol four. It survives in preservation and was photographed by sv1ambo at Shannons Eastern Creek Classic at Eastern Creek Raceway, Sydney, in August 2008.
