The record
St John Ambulance's modern Land Rover ambulances were coachbuilt by MMB International (Macclesfield Motor Bodies (UK) Ltd), a specialist ambulance builder that mounted tall square medical bodies on Defender 127/130 chassis; the type earned its keep where conventional ambulances could not go, including the 2004 Boscastle flood response on the UK mainland.
This vehicle was built in 2000 on a standard Defender 130 chassis with the 2.5-litre Td5 turbodiesel, fully fitted out with medical equipment, electrical systems and livery for £73,279 ex works. In Guernsey's St John fleet — which acts as the island's front-line ambulance service — it was the natural first choice for standby duty at outdoor sporting and motor-sport events and for incidents along the island's rugged coastline, where its off-road ability set it apart from the conventional ambulances alongside it.
On retirement it passed to the Land Rover Heritage Collection in full working order, still carrying its original medical fittings, teaching aids and even a 'Resuscitation Annie' training mannequin on the stretcher, and it continues to make public appearances with its sirens and lights operational.
Catalogue fields describe the vehicle's structure and body as this registry records it. They are not certified factory measurements, and no performance figures are published here.
