The record
This long-wheelbase Series II 109 pickup, built in 1959, spent part of its later life in the United States as the personal vehicle of James Bond actor Daniel Craig and his wife, the actress Rachel Weisz. It wears an older repaint in Bronze Green - a period Land Rover colour - with a rope-wrapped front bumper described in auction coverage as a 'rope winch', a spare wheel on the bonnet, an Exmoor Trim canvas bed cover, fender mirrors, side steps, a horseshoe on the grille and Cooper Discoverer STT tyres on 16-inch steel wheels. Power comes from the standard 2.25-litre petrol inline-four (77 bhp) through a four-speed manual gearbox with overdrive and a dual-range transfer case.
The couple sold the truck on Bring a Trailer in August 2026, offered from Newbury Park, California on a Montana title with an unverified 3,800-mile odometer; it made $56,000 after 35 bids. The sale included a handwritten note signed by both - 'This is to say that this beautiful Land Rover Defender was ours. We sell it with great sadness. Please take care of it.' - together with a signed portrait of Craig as Bond. Press coverage enjoyed pointing out that the note calls the truck a 'Defender', a name Land Rover only adopted in 1990, three decades after this Series II was built. No evidence was found for the sometimes-repeated story that the truck was a gift between the couple; the documented provenance is simply their joint ownership and the 2026 sale.
