After the attempt on his life in St Peter's Square in May 1981, John Paul II's tours needed a vehicle that would let the crowds see him while keeping him behind armour. Metalúrgica de Santa Ana of Linares — Santana, the Spanish Land Rover licensee — built one in 1983 on its 109-inch Series III-derived chassis: the standard cab in front, and behind it an armoured cabin with tinted, protective glazing rising well above the cab roof, entered by side steps, with a raised seat inside so the Pope stood or sat in full view. The Spanish press called it the safest Popemobile in the world at the time. It carried the Vatican's SCV 1 plate and the papal arms on its rear quarters, and served on John Paul II's tours in Spain and Latin America, Colombia among them.
