A water incident unit is a fire service's boat crew: an inflatable, dry suits, throw lines and the people trained to use them, carried on a vehicle that can get to a riverbank or a flooded road and, if need be, drive through water on the way. North Wales Fire and Rescue based its unit at Bangor, in the corner of the country where the Menai Strait, the Ogwen and the Conwy all run.
The vehicle is a Defender 110 registered G478 GJC — a 1989–90 plate, from the first year of the Defender name — in fire-service red with a snorkel for wading, two beacons and horns on the roof, lights in the grille and the black inflatable carried on top. It was photographed at Bangor on 24 March 2012. A G-registered 110 would carry either the 2.5-litre diesel of the late One Ten or the 200Tdi that arrived with the Defender badge in 1990; the source does not say which.
