Nkambeni Safari Defender
Fleet vehicle 14 of Nkambeni Safari Camp's game-drive Defenders inside Kruger National Park: green coachwork with a yellow stripe, a high canvas canopy over tiered passenger seats and the camp's fleet number on the side, one of a line of them photographed at the lodge in September 2012.
Nkambeni Safari Camp sits inside the Kruger National Park near the Numbi Gate, on a concession that gives it the right to drive guests through the park's south-western corner. Its fleet is Land Rover Defenders converted for game viewing — the body behind the cab rebuilt as tiered rows of forward-facing seats under a high canvas canopy on a tubular frame, in green with a yellow stripe along the flank, each numbered so that the camp can marshal a line of them at dawn. The photograph by the Commons contributor Ossewa, taken on 23 September 2012, shows several drawn up at the lodge.
The registry's model follows vehicle 14. Who built the game-viewing bodies, which engines the fleet carries and how many vehicles Nkambeni runs are not published; the conversion trade in South Africa is local and largely undocumented, and the registry's Defender 130 safari record covers the type more generally.
