E-WMIK.

The original WMIK of 1998 was a reconnaissance vehicle: a Wolf TUM HS with a roll-cage weapons ring, a three-man crew and no protection at all beyond speed and the ability to shoot back. By 2006 the British Army was fighting in Helmand, where the main threat was the improvised bomb under the road, and the Enhanced WMIK was the answer that could be delivered quickly on the existing fleet.

The E-WMIK's suspension was upgraded to carry more weight, and the weight it carried was armour: the Modular Armour Protection Installation Kit, MAPIK, adding wheel-arch and under-belly protection against IEDs. The wheels became alloys engineered to fragment under blast rather than be launched intact as projectiles into the crew. Communications went from carried sets to a fixed Bowman installation of two VHF and one HF radios. Mechanically it remained the Wolf: the 300 Tdi and R380 gearbox in standard configuration, with the 24-volt electrical system and a lowered roll cage so the vehicle would still fit inside a Chinook.

The E-WMIK's sequel arrived in 2008 as the Re-lifed WMIK, which moved the blast protection into an armoured V-hull; see the separate R-WMIK record. Production quantities for the enhancement programme are not published in the sources consulted.
