Fifty 50 Challenge Wolf 110

"Goldilocks": a 1997 Defender Wolf 110, R657 BAC, built for Sir Ranulph Fiennes' cancelled 1998 global expedition and then repainted gold as the support vehicle for the Fifty 50 Challenge — Land Rover employees' fiftieth-anniversary charity drive through 52 countries in 50 days, which ended in South Africa having raised £200,000.

The record

The vehicle began as one of several Defender Wolf 110s equipped by Land Rover for a global expedition to be led by Sir Ranulph Fiennes in 1998. The expedition was cancelled, and the Wolves — the strengthened 300 Tdi military Defenders then new in British service — were left looking for a purpose.

This one, chassis SALLDBA6BVA120509 and registered R657 BAC, found it in the Fifty 50 Challenge, a Land Rover employees' expedition to raise money for charity and mark the company's fiftieth year. It was repainted gold, fitted with a roof rack, communications equipment and internal racking, and christened Goldilocks by the team. As support vehicle it followed the challenge through 52 countries in 50 days — and 57 by the time the run ended in South Africa — raising £200,000 for UNICEF and other charities.

It is now in the Dunsfold Collection, still in its gold, with the 2.5-litre 300 Tdi and five-speed gearbox of the Wolf specification.
