Volcano Trails Super Defender

Volcano Trails' Icelandic 'Super Defender': a Defender 110 station wagon rebuilt by Reykjavík 4x4 specialists on 37-inch tyres under wide flares, with a snorkel for river crossings, on-board compressor for deflating the tyres on snow, auxiliary lamps, VHF radio and recovery gear, used to reach glaciers, volcanoes and the interior F-roads that standard vehicles cannot.

The record

Volcano Trails, the Þórsmörk-based sister of Volcano Huts, runs a fleet of Land Rover Defenders — the 'Volcano Rovers' — for self-drive and guided highland tours. Their Super Defenders were modified by adventure pioneers of Iceland's 4x4 scene (the ÍSAK-plated cars come from Ísak 4x4 in Reykjavík) to a higher degree than the Defender had been taken before while keeping its character: 2.4-litre Puma engines with six-speed manual gearboxes, 37-inch tyres for clearance, traction and flotation on snow when deflated, an on-board air compressor, auxiliary headlamps, a snorkel for river crossings and inbuilt VHF radio. The fleet page's photographs show the white wagons in glacial rivers and snowfields under wide body-colour flares.

The registry's model is a white Defender 110 station wagon lifted onto enlarged tyres under wide flares, with the snorkel, auxiliary lamps and ÍSAK plates; in the game it has expedition winch pickups and improved rough-ground traction.
