Challenger common-platform prototype.
The Challenger was a 1991 Land Rover engineering study for a common platform spanning the whole model range. Three prototypes were built; the sole survivor, military-style pick-up JUNO01 - a hand-built body on a Discovery chassis and cab - is preserved at the Dunsfold Collection.

The record
Project Challenger was an early-1990s Land Rover engineering programme exploring a common platform that could underpin every vehicle in the range, bridging the utility line about to be renamed Defender and the more car-like Discovery. Three Challenger prototypes were built in 1991: two civilian station wagons and one military-style pick-up.
The surviving pick-up, chassis JUNO01, uses a Discovery 1 chassis and cab fitted to a stretched 114-inch frame, with hand-built Defender-like rear bodywork. It was powered by a prototype '2.5 Gem 2 TDi' - a Gemini 2 development engine on the way to the production 300Tdi - driving through a Range Rover four-speed automatic, and carried both 12-volt and 24-volt electrical systems for the military role. Details betray its mock-up status: the door tops and windscreen are removable for a low-profile military configuration, and the sills are made of wood - it was never intended for real road use.
The common-platform idea did not reach production in this form, and two of the three Challengers were crushed. JUNO01 survived and is preserved by the Dunsfold Collection in Surrey, the charity that keeps Land Rover's prototype heritage; it stands as the only physical record of the programme.
