Brooklyn Coachworks is a custom Land Rover builder founded in 2018 by Daniel Marcello in a warehouse on Kent Avenue in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, New York. The firm hand-builds made-to-order Land Rovers — chiefly classic Defenders, alongside Range Rovers, Discoveries and mid-century Series vehicles — at a rate of roughly 12 to 20 vehicles a year, with additional operations in Italy, Virginia and West Palm Beach, Florida.
The Series One 107 ute is one of the firm's Series-based builds, created in collaboration with Timm Cooper, one of the best-known Land Rover fabricators working in the United States. The Coolector's feature on the truck traces its wanderings: it was crafted in California, spent most of its life on a farm in Hawaii, went back to Seattle with Cooper, and then came to New York. Three friends drove it coast to coast from Seattle to New York, after which it appeared on the cover of Alloy+Grit magazine.
Mechanically almost nothing of the original remains. The refurbished 107-inch body — joined by Series 80-inch front wings and bulkhead — sits on a chassis carrying leaf springs arranged spring-over-axle with an anti-wrap bar, and Rovertracks-converted Range Rover Classic axles with 30-spline chromoly shafts, uprated CVs, Toyota third members on 4.11 gears, an air locker at the front and a Yukon Zip Locker at the rear. Non-assisted disc brakes are fitted all round, and the truck runs widened, re-centred 15x10-inch wheels on 35x12.5x15 Pit Bull Rocker tyres. The original 2.0-litre Land Rover four of a little over 50 horsepower has been replaced by a Chevrolet 327 crate V8 with a Holley Sniper EFI system making about 350 horsepower, driving through an NP435 four-speed gearbox into a Land Rover Series transfer case. Equipment includes power steering, rock sliders plumbed for air lines, a bikini top, an 18-gallon fuel tank under the bed, a PTO winch on a steel front bumper and a tipping flat bed.
