Steels of Cheltenham held the Wolseley and Rover franchises for the town in the 1950s, and like most dealers of the day ran its own breakdown service. In 1954 it took a new Series I 107-inch pickup — the first long-wheelbase Land Rover, with the 2.0-litre engine — and fitted it out as a recovery truck with a crane on the bed, a TOWING board and beacons on the cab roof, and a pair of small towing-dolly wheels carried on the front bumper. Signwritten STEELS Cheltenham Ltd, Breakdown & Recovery Service, Phone 27033 and Distributors Wolseley and Rover, with AA & RAC Appointed on the wings, it served the garage and survives in that trim.
The two Flickr photographs from the Historic Commercial Vehicle Society's London to Brighton run in 2025 — one on the road, one parked under Concorde at Brooklands — are the references: blue Series I truck cab with a cream roof, the TOWING board and two amber beacons on the roof, spare on the bonnet, dolly wheels on the bumper, the signwriting along the doors and bed sides, a small crane at the rear of the bed, blue steel wheels and black HCL 164 plates. The registry model reproduces that vehicle in the Breakdown group; the game's Series I builder offers 80, 88 and 109-inch chassis, so the 107 is built on the 109.
