GPO Yeading TV Outside Broadcast.

A 30 cwt Land Rover Forward Control carrying a Yeading-built television outside-broadcast video unit for the Post Office, photographed in January 1971 — a mobile link vehicle for the Post Office's television circuits, on a chassis chosen because the broadcast sites were not always on a road.

The record

Before privatisation the Post Office ran the country's television and telephone trunk network, and outside broadcasts had to be carried from wherever the cameras were back to that network. Most of that work used vans. This vehicle was for the sites vans could not reach: a Land Rover Forward Control, the 30 cwt cab-over truck, bodied by Yeading as a TV outside-broadcast video unit.

The Post Office record gives the body builder and the role and little else — no registration, fleet number or quantity — and dates the photograph to January 1971. The chassis is the Series IIB Forward Control, which ran from 1966 to 1972 with a choice of the 2.25-litre petrol or diesel four or the 2.6-litre six.
