Hotspur Armoured Products

'Hotspur' began as the trade name of an armour plate made in Wales. The Royal Ulster Constabulary's first armoured Land Rovers, introduced from 1976 and produced in bulk in the late 1970s, were assembled in the force's own workshops from a Welsh-made armoured steel kit fitted to commercial Series III 109 chassis, and took the name Hotspur from that plate rather than from a coachbuilder. This is worth stating plainly, because the vehicle type and the company are often conflated.

Hotspur Armoured Products Limited was the commercial firm of the same name, based in Wales, which offered a catalogue of armoured Land Rover conversions to police and military customers — from discreetly protected patrol vehicles through the 4x4 Skirmisher to full internal-security types. It also armoured the Sandringham 6, the Land Rover-approved 6x6 conversion of the Series III Stage One V8 engineered by the closely associated Sandringham Motor Company (SMC Engineering of Bristol), producing a private-venture APC seating a crew of two and eight troops, and an exhibition air-defence carrier with twin 20 mm Rheinmetall cannon.

The firm's best-known product was the Hussar, first shown at the 1984 British Army Equipment Exhibition: a 6x6 armoured personnel carrier on a lengthened and strengthened Land Rover One Ten chassis with a third powered axle, proofed against 7.62 mm ball at 25 metres, powered by the 3.5-litre Rover V8, and offered with a one-man turret, grenade dischargers and run-flat tyres. Recorded exports total around 124 vehicles, chiefly 110 to Egypt, with nine to Sri Lanka and five to the Bahrain police; sources date deliveries variously from 1987 to 1997.

In August 1986 Hotspur Armoured Products became a division of Penman Engineering Limited, and design and manufacture moved to Penman's works at Heathhall, Dumfries; Jane's-derived directories thereafter list Hotspur at the Dumfries address, offering the Hussar and the Borderer armoured car. Hotspur Armoured Products (1986) Limited (company no. SC100186, Heathhall, Dumfries) was dissolved on 28 November 2017. What could not be established from any reliable source is when and by whom the original Welsh company was founded, where exactly in Wales it worked, or the identity of the pre-1986 registered company — hence this entry's draft status.
